Louis Cannon, MD, FACC, FACP, FACA, FCCP
Founder, Senior Managing Director
Dr. Cannon is an Interventional CardioVascular Specialist,President of the Cardiac and Vascular Research Center of Northern Michigan, the Founder of BioStar Ventures and has been repeatedly honored as one of " America 's Top Cardiologists." Dr. Cannon has over 125 medical publications and holds United States medical device patents. He is a Judith Volkman scholar, holds four specialty or sub-specialty certifications and has served on the advisory boards for such Fortune 500 companies as Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific, and Guidant as well as many early developing medical technologies. Dr. Cannon has participated in the start up and subsequent development of a multitude of developing bio-technological, or emerging health care companies and has served as the National or International Principal Investigator for landmark cardiovascular studies. Dr. Cannon assisted in performing First-In-Man percutaneous Aortic Valve procedures in Paraguay and served as Chairman of the Board of AorTx, Inc, which was successfully acquired by a publicly traded company. He also was instrumental as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of Setagon which was acquired by a Fortune 500 company.
Renee Masi, Managing Director
Ms. Masi has over 17 years of experience in the venture capital industry where she focused most recently on life science investing. Ms. Masi has served on the boards of several private companies and currently is a director for SynergEyes, Inc., and Vascular Precision. Prior to joining BioStar Ventures, Ms. Masi was a Partner with Windward Ventures, a firm focused on southern California early stage companies, where Ms. Masi was responsible for the firm’s life science investing strategy. Ms. Masi was an advisor to Ventures Medical, a seed stage fund affiliated with the Texas Medical Center. In 1990 Ms. Masi opened the Boston office for Technology Funding, a $250 million venture capital fund based in San Mateo, California. Ms. Masi began her career as an investment banker in the health care finance group of Merrill Lynch. Ms. Masi holds a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business.
Steven L. Almany, MD, FACC, Managing Director
Dr. Almany is the Corporate Vice Chief of Cardiology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is an interventional cardiologist and a partner of the Michigan Heart Group. Dr. Almany has been the Principle Investigator for many clinical trials and sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of many medical companies which include Accumed/Innovante, Onset and Sadra. Dr. Almany is a clinical consultant for the Abernathy Group and Longitude Capital. He also has served as a Scientific Advisor to Pequot Capital. Dr. Almany holds two US patents and has authored numerous publications as well as chapters in frequently cited important medical journals and books.
Jeffrey F. O'Donnell, Managing Director
Mr. O'Donnell brings exceptional operational experience as well as extensive experience in the healthcare industry, merging a solid, traditional corporate background with emerging growth experience. Mr. O'Donnell is currently the Chairman and CEO of Embrella Cardiovascular™, Inc. Prior to this role, Mr. O'Donnell served as President and CEO of PhotoMedex from 1999 to 2009. He also served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Radiance Medical Systems (originally Cardiovascular Dynamics) from 1995 to 1997 and then from 1997 to 1999 was the President and CEO. From 1994 to 1995 Mr. O'Donnell held the position of President and CEO of Kensey Nash Corporation. In 2005 Mr. O'Donnell was named LifeScience CEO of the year by the Eastern Technology Council. Additionally, he has held several senior sales and marketing management positions at Boston Scientific Corporation, Guidant Corporation and Johnson & Johnson’s Orthopedic Division. Mr. O'Donnell is an outside Board Member of Endologix, Inc., Replication Medical, Inc., and is a Medical Advisory Board member of Safeguard Scientific.
David J Brophy, Ph.D.
Professor Brophy is the Director of the University of Michigan Business School Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity. He is also a member of the Finance and Entrepreneurial Studies Faculty at the University of Michigan School of Business Administration (UMBS) where he teaches courses in corporate valuation, venture capital and both domestic and international private equity and finance. Dr. Brophy is active internationally in the field of venture capital and private equity finance, entrepreneurship and initiated the process of information surveying for the National Venture Capital Association, a process that is now the major source of information on the venture capital market. Dr. Brophy has advised several institutional and corporate investors in their private equity finance activities. He has been a director of several public companies and is a director and consultant to banks, money market funds, and financial services firms.
Paul A. Scott, CFO
Mr. Scott has over 23 years of venture capital experience in the areas of turnaround management and fund administration. Mr. Scott is also CFO & Administrative Partner for Windward Ventures. Prior to being acquired in 2008, Mr. Scott served as a director of AdvancedMD Software, a private company headquartered in Utah. Prior to Windward Ventures, Mr. Scott was an independent consultant providing interim senior management to venture funded companies. Mr. Scott was previously President & CEO of VSI Enterprises, Inc., a public company headquartered in Atlanta. He began his career with Wells Fargo Bank and Sears Bank. Mr. Scott has a BA from Ithaca College and a MBA from Loyola University of Chicago.
Lisa Riedmiller, Controller
Ms. Riedmiller has over 20 years of venture capital fund accounting, investor relations and fund administration experience. Current clients include: Palomar Ventures, Blade Ventures, Rincon Ventures, Okapi Ventures, Global Opportunities Fund and Crosscut Ventures. Formerly, Ms. Riedmiller has worked with Windward Ventures, Capstone Ventures, Ocean Park Ventures, and Enterprise Partners. Over the years, Ms. Riedmiller has worked with a variety of start-ups as a function of her involvement with their investors. In addition, Ms. Riedmiller worked for OSCCO Ventures from 1988 to 1997. Ms. Riedmiller holds a BA from California State University at San Jose.

Steven R. Bailey, MD, FACC, FACP
Dr. Bailey is an internationally recognized interventional cardiologist with particular expertise in biomaterials and animal lab research. Dr. Bailey has advised and conducted animal lab and clinical research on new devices including the Palmaz-Schatz stent, Rotoblator and Atherocath, and was one of the original Inoue balloon investigators in the US. Dr. Bailey is the Director of the Catheterization Laboratories and Interventional Cardiology at the University Hospital of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Bailey is also Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Texas Health Sciences at San Antonio.
Alan Davis, MD
Dr. Davis is a highly regarded orthopedic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic as well as a team physician for the United States Olympic Team. He was an Academic All-American and Captain of one of Michigan State’s most successful football teams. He has been involved in multiple medical and metabolic technologies including those related to sports drinks and the metabolic needs of high performance athletes as well as computerized software design for maximized bio mechanical muscle training.
Peter J. Fitzgerald, MD, PhD, FACC
Dr. Fitzgerald is both a Professor of Medicine and Professor of Engineering at Stanford University. He also serves as Director at the Center for Cardiovascular Technology and Director of the Core Cardiovascular Analysis Lab at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Fitzgerald has co-authored over 200 clinical papers and abstracts on various topics in Interventional Cardiology and has participated in numerous major clinical trials involving the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. Dr. Fitzgerald runs the leading IVUS core lab for cardiovascular clinical trials and has been principal and founder of several medical device companies in the San Francisco Bay area. Dr. Fitzgerald is an experienced venture capitalist, and is a General Partner of Latterell Ventures, a leading health care venture capital firm.
Mark Reisman, MD, FACC
Dr. Reisman is the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the Cardiovascular Research and Education at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Reisman is an interventional cardiologist and recognized expert in structural heart disease. He serves on the scientific advisory board for several public and private companies including CoAptus, Abbott Vascular and Boston Scientific Corporation. Dr. Reisman is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA.
Frank Shannon, MD, FACC
Dr. Shannon is a cardiovascular surgeon with William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Dr. Shannon has authored numerous publications in cardiovascular and general surgery, and is a reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Shannon is a well-known surgical valve design innovator, with particular expertise in mitral and tricuspid valve systems, percutaneous/minimally accessible mitral annular remodeling devices, aortic valves, and minimally invasive devices used in atrial ablation procedures. Dr. Shannon sits on the scientific advisory board of Micardia, a BioStar Ventures portfolio company, and is a consultant to Medtronic, Datascope, and Pequot Capital Management.
Gregg W. Stone, MD, FACC, FACP
Dr. Stone is an internationally recognized cardiologist who has led over 40 trials and has served as the national or international principle investigator for more than 25 multicenter randomized clinical trials. Dr. Stone practices interventional cardiology at Lenox Hill Hospital in NY and has performed over 5,000 angioplasty and stent procedures. Dr. Stone has particular expertise in drug-eluting stents, vulnerable plaque, acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction, antithrombotic and antiplatelet agents, contrast nephropathy, transcatheter valve therapies and new device development. Dr. Stone directs the annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) meeting, the world’s largest symposium devoted to interventional cardiology and vascular medicine. Dr. Stone is triple board certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease and Internal Medicine. He is Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and the immediate past chairman of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York.
Steve Yakubov, MD, FACC
Dr. Yakubov is an interventional cardiologist and the Medical Director of the Mid West Cardiology Research Foundation in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Yakubov has been involved with over 75 active clinical trials involving interventional cardiology, peripheral vascular medicine and electrophysiology. Dr. Yakubov runs the third largest clinical trial site in the US. Dr. Yakubov is widely published and sits on the scientific advisory boards of several start up companies including RTI, a BioStar Ventures portfolio company. In February 2007, Dr. Yakubov was named the Number One cardiologist in central Ohio, according to an exclusive survey of 5,000 doctors in seven central Ohio counties.
